2019 NOI+F/Sphinx Fellowship Project
In 2019, the National Orchestral Institute + Festival (NOI+F) Sphinx Futurist Fellow Camille Jones curated a professional development workshop to connect music students in Prince George’s County Maryland to professional Black and Latinx artists. Her work also included commissioning two works for high school and middle school orchestra by the composers Carlos Simon and Erica Telisnor. Each work would be performed by two combined orchestras respectively. Including: Bowie HS, Northwestern HS, Suitland HS, Hyattsville MS, Benjamin Foulois, and Thomas Pullen. Camille also collaborated with Sphinx competition laureates Melissa White and Elena Urioste, and music director of Play on Philly, Andres Gonzales, for this event.
The arrival of the global coronavirus pandemic inevitably meant the delay and reimagining of the previously planned in-person activities. However, Camille and the K-12 teachers were passionate about finding ways to engage with students in a virtual setting. Below you will find an adaptation of this project that’s suitable for a virtual teaching environment!

String Technique Series
In this 6-part video series, NOI+F/Sphinx Futurist Fellow Camille Jones and her colleagues present a variety of basic string techniques that are applicable to any young and aspiring string students! This series was originally curated for the middle school and high school students of Prince George's County, Maryland, that participated in the 2019 Sphinx Futurist Fellowship project.
This series is not intended to substitute personal instruction, but rather act as additional guidance to new and beginner students.
