In Celebration of Black History Month, the National Philharmonic put on a beautiful concert last weekend. They featured works entirely written by African-American composers on a program titled “Black Pioneers In Classical Music”. The highlight of the show for me had to be Melissa White’s brilliant performance of the Florence Price Violin Concerto no. 1. We are certainly making history within the classical music world if we are able to have a black woman playing a concerto written by a black woman alongside a major orchestra!
